FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ALLEGED INMATE ASSAULT AT KENT INSTITUTION

AGASSIZ, BC, October 17, 2006 - A Kent Institution cellblock with 20 inmates is locked down today as a result of an alleged inmate assault last night.

The 34 year old inmate was allegedly assaulted at around 10:30 p.m. on October 16. The inmate has a superficial wound, and Kent Health Services staff have been notified.

The institution's Security Intelligence Office is investigating the incident. A search for weapons is being conducted today in the cellblock that is locked down. Remaining cellblocks are operating normally.

No staff or other inmates were injured during this incident.

Kent Institution is a federal maximum-security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 211 inmates.
