LOCKDOWN AT MISSION INSTITUTION

MISSION, BC, November 24, 2006 - Mission Institution was locked down at 3 p.m. today to allow staff to conduct an extraordinary search.

The inmates are locked in their cells while staff perform searches of the living units and work areas looking for contraband items that pose a potential threat to the security of the institution.

Information about these items came to the attention of the Institution through the use of various intelligence gathering mechanisms in place that provide a proactive approach towards maintaining the security and well being of staff, inmates and the institutional infrastructure.

The lock down will continue through tomorrow (November 25).

Mission Institution is a medium-security federal facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located just north of Mission and currently houses 268 male offenders.
