FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AGASSIZ, BC, May 3, 2007 - Kent Institution was locked down at approximately 11:50 am today as a result of an inmate taking another inmate hostage in his cell.
At approximately 3:20 p.m., successful negotiations brought the incident to a close, and the Emergency Response Team was able to safely remove both the hostage taker and hostage from the cell.
The makeshift weapon was recovered.
The institution remains locked down as the investigation into the incident continues.
No staff or inmates were injured during this incident.
Kent Institution is a federal maximum-security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 217 inmates.
