FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AGASSIZ, BC, May 3, 2007 - Kent Institution is locked down today as a result of an inmate taking another inmate hostage in his cell.

At approximately 11:50 a.m., staff attempted to move an inmate to another area of the institution after an assault on another inmate. The inmate did not want to be removed from his unit, and proceeded to take his cell partner hostage. The hostage taker may be armed with a makeshift weapon.

Staff are communicating with the hostage taker.

Kent Institution is a federal maximum-security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 217 inmates.
