FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ABBOTSFORD, BC, June 28, 2007 - Matsqui Institution's main living unit has been locked down since 6:00 pm on Wednesday June 27, 2007 when an inmate was assaulted in his cell. Assailants were identified and moved to segregation cells. Abbotsford Police Department is investigating.

A quantity of home-made weapons, drugs, drug paraphernalia and a cell phone has been found during some targeted searching today. The Warden has now ordered an exceptional search for additional weapons, drugs, illicit cell phones or other dangerous items.

Regularly scheduled visits to the institution have been suspended for the duration of the lockdown. Scheduled Private Family Visits are continuing.

Matsqui Institution is a medium security facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located in Abbotsford and has a current population of 336 male offenders.
