FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ABBOTSFORD, BC, July 4, 2007 - Matsqui Institution returned to normal operation on July 3. The main living unit was locked down June 27 when an inmate was assaulted in his cell. Abbotsford Police are continuing to investigate.

A quantity of home-made knives, drugs, drug paraphernalia, tattooing equipment and a cell phone was found during an exceptional search.

Regularly scheduled visits to the institution that were suspended during the lockdown have been reinstated.

Matsqui Institution is a medium security facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located in Abbotsford and has a current population of 330 male offenders.
