AGASSIZ, BC, September 17, 2007 - Kent Institution remains locked down today following an assault on an inmate during the evening on September 15.
At approximately 10 p.m. Saturday, correctional staff responded to the institutional gymnasium where an inmate had been assaulted. Due to the extent of his injuries, the inmate was transported to Royal Columbian hospital for assessment and treatment. He has been released from hospital and is back at Kent Institution.
The inmate received numerous stab wounds to the face and throat. A weapon was recovered from the scene of the incident. An assailant has been identified and is currently in Kent Institution's Segregation Unit.
The RCMP and the institution's Security Intelligence Office continue to investigate the incident.
A search for other weapons is being conducted in the yard and gymnasium. The Institution remains locked down to facilitate the investigation.
No staff or other inmates were injured during this incident.
Kent Institution is a federal maximum-security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver. The Institution currently houses 228 inmates.
