AGASSIZ, BC, October 9, 2007 - Kent Institution remains locked down today following an assault on an inmate yesterday afternoon (October 8).
At approximately 1 p.m. on October 8, correctional staff responded to one of the cell blocks where an inmate had been assaulted. Due to the extent of his the injuries, the inmate was transported by ambulance to outside Hospital where he remains after undergoing surgery. He is listed in serious but stable condition.
The inmate received multiple stab wounds to his upper torso. A homemade metal weapon was has been recovered from the scene of the incident and it is in the possession of the police. AnThe assailant has not yet been identified but the RCMP and the institution's Security Intelligence Office continue to investigate.
A search for other weapons is being conducted in the units and exercise yards today. The Kent Institution remains locked down to facilitate the investigation and search.
No staff or other inmates were injured during this incident.
Kent Institution is a federal maximum-security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 221 inmates.
