FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT AT KENT INSTITUTION

AGASSIZ, BC, November 1, 2007 - Kent Institution was locked down last night (October 31) as a result of an inmate stabbing.

At approximately 9:45 p.m., an inmate was stabbed while he was in a living-unit common area. He was transported to outside hospital for treatment and returned to the Institution later in the evening.

The weapon used in the assault has not been recovered. The RCMP has been notified and is investigating. No staff or other inmates were injured during the incident.

The institution is locked down and searching is ongoing.

Another inmate was stabbed October 26 in a different unit at Kent Institution. That unit has been locked down since last week's incident.

Kent Institution is a federal maximum-security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 217 inmates.
