MISSION, BC, January 18, 2008 - Inmates at Mission Institution are locked in their cells while staff conduct a search for weapons.
The lockdown was initiated on Thursday, January 17th at 1545 hours after an inmate was assaulted. The inmate sustained minor injuries; there were no injuries to staff.
The lockdown has been put in place in order to facilitate a search of the facility while ensuring the continued safety and security of the public, staff and inmates.
The lockdown will continue until the search is complete. A determination on regularly scheduled visits will be made tomorrow, should the lockdown continue.
Mission Institution is a medium-security federal facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located just north of Mission and currently houses 279 male offenders.
