FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INMATE DEATH AT MOUNTAIN INSTITUTION

AGASSIZ, BC, April 1, 2008 - At approximately 23:00 hours Sunday night, Mountain Institution inmate Trevor Wayne O’Brien was pronounced dead at outside hospital. Mr. O’Brien was serving a 3 year 9 month sentence for robbery and various property offences.

It appears at this time that the cause of death was an overdose. Mr. O’Brien was taken to outside hospital during a major disturbance within the institution on March 29, 2008. Next of kin have been notified.

The RCMP and the institution's Security Intelligence Office are investigating the incident.

The institution is still in lock down.

Mountain Institution is a federal medium-security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver.  The institution currently houses 430 inmates.
