LOCKDOWN ENDS AT MATSQUI INSTITUTION

ABBOTSFORD, BC, June 19, 2008 - The lockdown at Matsqui Institution ended at 0800 hrs today. All regularly scheduled visits and other planned activities have recommenced.

Inmates had been confined to their cells since June 18, 2008 to facilitate a police investigation and search of the institution, following a serious inmate assault. Two inmates have been placed in segregation in connection with the assault. The injuries sustained by the assaulted inmate have been reassessed as non-life threatening.

Matsqui Institution is a medium security facility operated by Correctional Service of Canada. It is located in Abbotsford, BC and has a current population of 374 male offenders.
