FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ASSAULT AT MISSION INSTITUTION

MISSION, BC, October 2, 2008 - On Thursday, October 2, 2008 at approximately 9 a.m., an inmate was assaulted by another inmate at Mission Institution. The injured inmate sustained multiple stab wounds and was transported by ambulance to the nearest health care facility. The inmate is now in stable condition and remains in an outside hospital. The RCMP is conducting an investigation into the incident. The institution is currently locked down.

In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents, the Correctional Service of Canada will continue to work with the police in an effort review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action where necessary.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

Mission Institution is a medium security federal facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located just north of Mission and currently houses 278 male offenders.
