AGASSIZ, B.C. – One of the living units at Kent Institution has been locked down following the suicide of an inmate this evening.
At approximately 8:42 pm, correctional staff completing security rounds in A Block identified a non responsive inmate in his cell. Additional staff responded to the cell along with health care, and CPR was initiated. The inmate was transported to the Institutional Health Services Unit where he was pronounced dead.
The deceased was a 39 year old who was serving an indeterminate sentence for Second Degree Murder.
The RCMP and the institution's Security Intelligence Office are investigating the incident.
A block will remain locked down throughout the investigation and the remainder of the institution will continue on regular routine.
No staff or other inmates were injured during this incident.
Kent Institution is a federal maximum-security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 225 inmates.
