LOCKDOWN AT MOUNTAIN INSTITUTION

Agassiz, BC (August 25, 2009) - Mountain Institution is currently locked down while staff conduct an exceptional search of the institution for homemade weapons and drugs.

The lockdown was initiated at 0700hrs on Monday after information was received that material used to fabricate homemade weapons had been found.

All visits to the institution have been cancelled until the search is concluded.

The facility will reopen once institutional management determines that it is safe to do so.

Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

Mountain Institution is a federal medium-security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 450 inmates.
