FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INMATE DEATH AT MOUNTAIN INSTITUTION (PACIFIC)

AGASSIZ, BC, December 3, 2009 – On December 2, 2009, Allan Walsh, an inmate from Mountain Institution died of apparent natural causes while in custody.

Walsh was 52 years old and serving a life sentence for sexual assault, kidnapping, forcible confinement and robbery offences. His sentence commenced on March 27, 1979.

As in all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner are notified. In addition, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Mountain Institution is a federal medium-security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 440 inmates.
