FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOCKDOWN AT KENT INSTITUTION

Agassiz, BC, January 8, 2010 - On January 7, 2010 at approximately 4:00 p.m. information was received that contraband was present within the inmate population. The institution was locked down to facilitate a search and ensure the safety of staff and inmates.

Emergency Response Team members are conducting the searching of the units and the remainder of staff will be searching other areas of the institution.

The institution will remain locked down until the searching has been completed.

Inmate visits will not be taking place during the lockdown.

Kent Institution is a federal maximum security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 213 inmates.
