Agassiz, BC, January 28, 2010 – At approximately 13:10 hours on January 27, 2010 an inmate in segregation at Kent Institution assaulted a staff member. Physical force and OC spray were used to cease the assault. The staff member was taken to outside hospital for assessment and is reported to be in good condition.
At approximately 14:00 hours on January 27, 2010 a staff member was assaulted by a general population inmate at Kent institution resulting in a warning shot being fired. Additional staff responded immediately and the inmate was segregated. The staff member sustained minor injuries and was seen by Health Services.
B block was locked down to allow for an investigation into the incident and ensure the safety of staff. B block will remain locked down until the investigation into the incident is completed. The remaining blocks are operating on normal routine.
The RCMP were contacted and will be investigating both incidents.
Kent Institution is a federal maximum security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 213 inmates.
