FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOCKDOWN – KENT INSTITUTION

Agassiz, BC, March 19, 2010 - At approximately 7:00 p.m. last evening, an inmate fight occurred in the gymnasium during the recreation period at Kent Institution. Warning shots were fired to control the situation. One inmate was transported to outside hospital for assessment of non life threatening stab wounds and was later returned to custody. No staff or other inmates were injured during this incident.

The weapon was retrieved from the scene and the assailant has been identified. The RCMP and the institution's Security Intelligence Office are investigating the incident.

The institution will remain locked down until the searching has been completed. Regularly scheduled visits will not take place until the searching has concluded.

Kent Institution is a federal maximum security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 224 inmates.
