FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOCKDOWN – MATSQUI INSTITUTION

Abbotsford, BC, March 29, 2010 - At approximately 13:45 p.m. on Sunday, March 28, 2010, an inmate was assaulted at Matsqui Institution. The victim was transported to outside hospital for assessment of possible life threatening injuries although he is reported to be in stable condition. No staff or other inmates were injured during this incident.

The institution is reviewing information regarding the possible assailant(s). The Abbotsford Police Department and the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) are investigating the incident. Regularly scheduled visits and scheduled Private Family Visits to the institution have been suspended for the duration of the lockdown.

The institution will remain locked down until an exceptional search has been completed.

Matsqui Institution is a medium security facility operated by CSC. It is located in Abbotsford and has a current population of 261 male offenders.
