FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOCKDOWN AT MISSION INSTITUTION

Mission, BC, September 1, 2010 - Mission Institution is currently locked down following an inmate assault. On August 31, at approximately 2122 hrs, the victim was assaulted by an unknown aggressor outside of a living unit. The victim was transported to an outside hospital by ambulance for assessment and treatment of facial injuries and later returned to the institution. The institution was placed on lockdown. An investigation is ongoing.

Visits are proceeding based upon individualized threat risk assessments. The facility will reopen once institutional management determines that it is safe to do so.

Mission Institution is a medium security federal facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located just north of Mission and currently houses 274 male offenders.
