INMATE ASSAULT AT MOUNTAIN INSTITUTION

AGASSIZ, B.C., October 12, 2010 - Mountain Institution is locked down following a serious assault on an inmate which took place on October 10, 2010.

At approximately 3:30 pm on October 10, correctional staff responded to an inmate fight involving four inmates in the common room area of a living unit. Correctional staff intervened and quickly gained control of the situation.

Institutional Health Services responded and assessed the condition of the inmates involved. Due to the severity of his injuries, one inmate was immediately transported by ambulance to an outside hospital. Two additional inmates, with less serious injuries, were escorted by correctional staff to an outside hospital for further assessment.

The RCMP and the Institution's Security Intelligence Office are investigating the incident. The Institution will remain locked down during the investigation, and search for weapons. The Institution will re-open when management determines it is safe to do so.

No staff or other inmates were injured during this incident.

Mountain Institution is a federal medium-security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 420 inmates.
