FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INMATE DEATH – MOUNTAIN INSTITUTION

Agassiz, BC, November 23, 2010 - At approximately 10:05 hours on November 22, 2010, offender Jeremy PHILLIPS was found unresponsive in his cell. Correctional staff responded along with institutional healthcare staff who were in the vicinity at the time. A medical doctor pronounced him dead at 10:15 hours. Next of kin have been notified.

Mr. PHILLIPS was 33 years old and was serving a six year, nine month sentence for aggravated assault and conspiring to commit an indictable offence. His sentence commenced on October 18, 2006 and was to expire on July 13, 2013.

As in all cases where an individual dies in custody, the police and Coroners Service have been called to investigate. The Correctional Service of Canada will also conduct a review of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
