CONTRABAND SEIZURE – MOUNTAIN INSTITUTION

Agassiz, BC, February 17, 2011 – A package containing a significant quantity of tobacco and steroids was seized at Mountain Institution on February 15, 2011. The contraband came into the institution in a cardboard box that had been processed through Canada Post addressed to the institution. The package was intercepted by staff and the contents were searched. The search revealed 14 plastic bags of tobacco and 100 steroid capsules, lighters and rolling papers with an approximate institutional value of $20 000.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is strengthening measures to prevent contraband from entering institutions, in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone, and promote a rehabilitative environment for inmates. CSC also works in partnership with the police to prosecute inmates and others who attempt to have contraband brought into correctional institutions.

The Agassiz RCMP were contacted, and the institution is investigating.

Mountain Institution is a federal medium-security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver. The institution currently houses 410 inmates.
