INMATE ASSAULT AT MATSQUI INSTITUTION

ABBOTSFORD, BC, April 20, 2011 – Matsqui Institution is locked down following an inmate assault.

On Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at approximately 20:20 hours, an inmate was found to have been assaulted at Matsqui Institution. The injured inmate was immediately assessed by staff and escorted to outside hospital for treatment. Injuries were sustained but are not considered serious. The institution was immediately placed on lockdown.

All inmates are secured in the living units as an investigation has been initiated into the assault. Regularly scheduled visits to the institution have been suspended for the duration of the lockdown.

The facility will reopen once institutional management determines that it is safe to do so. Regularly scheduled visits will not take place until this time. Safety and security remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system.

Matsqui Institution is a medium security facility located in Abbotsford and currently houses 266 male offenders.
