Escape from Ferndale Institution

Mission, B.C., May 23, 2011 – On May 23, 2011, inmate Andrew David Shizgal, was discovered missing during the Ferndale Institution 19:00 PM count.  The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) immediately contacted the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Mission Detachment, and a warrant has been issued for the inmate’s arrest.

Inmate Shizgal, date of birth 1971-04-14, is described as 175 cm (5’9”) in height.  His weight is 81 Kg (179 lbs); he has brown eyes and brown hair and a scar on his left arm. He is currently serving a 10 years, 1 month, 7 days sentence for break and enter and theft. He has also served sentences for possession of weapons and of property obtained by crime, forgery and fraud.

CSC is working closely with the RCMP in an effort to locate this inmate as quickly as possible. CSC has given the police all available information to assist in the inmate’s recapture.

Ferndale Institution is a minimum-security federal facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located in the district of Mission and currently houses 128 male offenders. Only those inmates who are assessed as having a low risk to public safety are placed in a minimum security Institution.
