Communiqué

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INMATE DEATH – KENT INSTITUTION

Agassiz, BC, July 13, 2011 –At approximately 0400 hours on July 13, 2011, offender Darryl COLE was found unresponsive in his cell.  Correctional Staff responded and began to administer CPR.  Emergency Ambulance Services were notified and arrived but were unable to revive the offender. 

Mr. COLE was 44 years old and was serving a thirteen year, six month sentence for Manslaughter. His sentence commenced on February 22, 2011 and was to expire on August 21, 2024.

The RCMP and Coroner Service have been called to Kent Institution to investigate. The Correctional Service of Canada will also conduct a review of the circumstances surrounding the incident. While the exact cause of death has not been confirmed, foul play is not suspected at this time.

Next of kin have been notified.

Kent Institution remains locked down until the RCMP release the scene.

Kent Institution is a federal maximum security institution located 120 kilometers east of Vancouver.  The institution currently houses 266 maximum security inmates.
