CONTRABAND SEIZURE – MISSION INSTITUTION

Mission, B.C., September 2, 2011 – Four packages containing a cell phone, a significant quantity of tobacco and other controlled substances were seized at Mission Institution on Sept 1, 2011 after staff observed a throw over near the perimeter fence.  The packages were intercepted by staff and revealed 823 grams of tobacco, two grams of heroin, syringes and needles,10 grams of marijuana, lighters and rolling papers with an approximate institutional value of over $ 9 000.

An inmate picked up a package; he was searched, interviewed and placed in segregation.  Three other inmates were also placed in segregation for investigation purposes.  At this time the Institution remains on regular routine.

As part of its Transformation Agenda, Correctional Service Canada (CSC) is strengthening measures to prevent contraband from entering institutions, in order to help ensure a safe and secure environment for everyone, and promote a rehabilitative environment for inmates. CSC also works in partnership with the police to prosecute inmates and others who attempt to have contraband brought into correctional institutions.

CSC has set up a telephone Tip-Line at all federal institutions in the Pacific Region to provide an additional source for receiving information about activities that relate to safety and security of CSC institutions. These activities may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of people visiting, working at or housed at a CSC facility.

The toll-free Tip-Line number, 1-866-780-3784, assures that information received is protected and callers may choose to remain anonymous. Mission Institution is a federal medium-security institution located just north of the City of Mission. The institution currently houses 264 inmates.
