FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LOCKDOWN AND SEARCH AT PACIFIC INSTITUTION

Abbotsford, B.C., November 29, 2011 - At approximately 7:50 p.m., on November 28, the Regional Reception and Assessment Centre at Pacific Institution, a multiple-security level federal penitentiary, was placed on lockdown to facilitate a search of the living unit as a result of an inmate assault. 

The safety and security of our institutions is the primary consideration of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). The Regional Reception and Assessment Centre will re-open as soon as the search is complete and it is determined safe to do so.

In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents, CSC will continue to work in an effort to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action where necessary.
