FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ESCAPE FROM DRUMHELLER INSTITUTION

DRUMHELLER, AB, January 11, 2004 - Edward Makaruk is considered to be unlawfully at large from Drumheller Institution, Minimum Security Unit, after his failure to return from an Unescorted Temporary Absence on January 10, 2004.

Mr. Makaruk was released on a 72 hour Family Contact, Unescorted Temporary Absence (UTA), to visit family members in St. Albert, Alberta. His UTA commenced at noon on January 9, 2004 and was to expire at noon on January 12, 2004. A condition of his UTA was to reside at a family member's residence on January 9, 2004. He failed to abide by this condition, his UTA was cancelled and a Warrant of Apprehension and Suspension was issued at approximately 06:30 p.m., January 10, 2004.

Edward Makaruk is a 22 year old inmate serving a 5 year sentence for three counts of Robbery. His sentence commenced on February 15, 2002 with a warrant expiry date of February 14, 2007. Mr. Makaruk is 5' 10" tall, weighs 217 lbs, has short black hair and medium complexion.

The Drumheller Minimum Security Unit is located adjacent to the main medium security Drumheller Institution. The minimum security unit currently has a population of 72 minimum security inmates. Drumheller is located 125km northeast of Calgary.
