DEATH AT THE REGIONAL PSYCHIATRIC CENTRE

SASKATOON, SK, February 17, 2004 - At approximately 7 a.m. this morning, an offender at the Regional Psychiatric Centre was found not breathing and unresponsive in his room. Emergency medical response was initiated. A doctor was called on site and later pronounced the offender dead.

The cause of death is unknown, however he was suffering from a chronic medical condition. The offender had been receiving medical treatment and care from the staff at the Regional Psychiatric Centre since August 15, 2002. As is the case whenever an offender dies while in custody, the police and coroner were notified and the investigation is ongoing. The death will also be the focus of a coroner's inquest as well as a thorough investigation by CSC.

The deceased is 56 year old Stuart Ian Robertson, a dangerous offender with multiple convictions who was serving an indeterminate sentence. The sentence commenced on May 15, 1981. Next of kin have been notified.

The Regional Psychiatric Centre is a multi-level psychiatric hospital located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and operated by the Correctional Service of Canada through an affiliation agreement between Canada and the University of Saskatchewan. The Centre provides assessment, intensive programming, treatment for mental disorders, and a 24-hour medical care to individuals from the federal and provincial justice systems. There are currently 190 patients receiving assessment and/or treatment at the Centre.
