FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
REGINA, SK, May 14, 2004 - Based on the successful completion of a public consultation on the new Oskana Centre, the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) will proceed with the development of a new facility to replace the aging 20-bed Oskana Community Correctional Centre. The Oskana Centre is currently located at 1314 -11th Avenue in downtown Regina. The new site, which is located in an industrial area of the 1600 block of Halifax Street, is across from the Regina police station, and only blocks from the existing facility. This relocation will make it possible for the Oskana Centre to remain in the same core area where it has been for the last 32 years.
The Oskana Centre is owned and operated by CSC and provides accommodation, programming, supervision, and support to offenders who are returning to the community on conditional release. Conditional release helps individuals make a gradual and structured return to society, thus increasing the likelihood of safe and successful reintegration.
It is anticipated that construction will be completed by fall 2005.
