PRINCE ALBERT, SASKATCHEWAN, August 10, 2004 - At approximately 5:45 pm Tuesday August 10, 2004, staff within the segregation unit at Saskatchewan Penitentiary observed two inmates forcibly confine another inmate. This incident occurred within the exercise yard of the segregation unit.
The unit was immediately locked down and negotiations with the perpetrators started in an attempt to resolve the incident. The incident was resolved peacefully at approximately 9:50 pm, when the victim was released and the perpetrators were removed from the area. The victim received some minor injuries and received medical treatment at the institution. There were no other reports of injuries to any other inmates or staff involved in the incident.
Profiles of the perpetrators are as follows: a 30-year-old, serving a 6 year sentence for armed robbery x2, robbery x4, fraud, possession of property obtained by crime, break enter and commit theft x4, mischief, disguise with intent, fail to comply, carry concealed weapon, attempt indictable offence x2, break enter with intent, theft under x2, theft over, utter forged documents and personation with intent. The second is a 21-year-old serving a 2 year, 8 month, 5 day sentence for escape lawful custody, fail to comply with probation x2, theft under x2, mischief x3 and obstruct peace officer.
The incident involved only the three inmates from the segregation unit. The remainder of the inmate population were not directly involved in the incident.
Institutional officials are currently investigating the incident and the RCMP will conduct their own investigation to determine if criminal charges are warranted.
Saskatchewan Penitentiary is a federal institution for medium security inmates. It also contains a separate maximum-security unit. There are currently 484 inmates in total at the facility.
