FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EDMONTON, AB, October 4, 2004 - On Sunday, October 3rd, an inmate was stabbed at Edmonton Institution.

Just prior to 4:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon, an inmate was assaulted in the recreation yard while participating in a regularly scheduled exercise period. Upon investigation, staff discovered the victim had several puncture wounds. The victim/inmate was transported to hospital for medical treatment and remained over night under observation with injuries which were non-life threatening. The inmate is back at Edmonton Institution today.

Edmonton Institution is on lockdown status. The Edmonton Police Service is conducting a criminal investigation.

Edmonton Institution is a maximum security federal penitentiary which currently houses 227 inmates.
