FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH AT GRANDE CACHE INSTITUTION

GRANDE CACHE, AB, November 15, 2004 - At approximately 0050 hours on November 15, 2004 an inmate was found hanging in his cell at Grande Cache Institution. Following the administration of CPR by institutional staff, the 41-year-old offender was pronounced dead on the scene by the attending physician at 0107 hours.

The inmate, Stephen Kenneth Barnard, born August 21, 1963, had been serving a two years and six months sentence for armed robbery and disguise-with-intent offences. His sentence commenced on February 10, 2004 and was due to expire on August 9, 2006.

The incident is under investigation by the police, coroner and the Correctional Service of Canada. No foul play is suspected.

The Grande Cache Institution is a minimum-security institution located in the town of Grande Cache, Alberta, 445 kilometers north-west of Edmonton.
