STONY MOUNTAIN, MB, January 31, 2005 - At approximately 9:30 p.m. yesterday, two minimum security inmates at Rockwood Institution could not be located. A thorough search of the buildings and grounds surrounding the institution was done but failed to find the inmates. Both the RCMP and Winnipeg Police Service have been notified.
The first missing inmate, Steven Demkey, 26 years old, is serving a four year sentence for break and enter and theft related offences. His sentence commenced November 26, 2003. He is 176 cm tall (5' 9"), weighs 77 kg (170 lbs.), and has brown hair and blue eyes. He has one tattoo on his right calf.
The second missing inmate, Felipi Valente, 25 years old, is serving a nine year, seven month and 22 days sentence for drug trafficking offences. His sentence commenced June 25, 2003. He is 180 cm tall (5' 11"), weighs 95 kg (210 lbs.), and has black hair and brown eyes. He has tattoos on both arms.
The escapes will be the focus of a detailed investigation by the Correctional Service of Canada.
Rockwood Institution is a minimum security federal facility located adjacent to the medium security Stony Mountain Institution, 13 km north of Winnipeg. The institution currently has a population of 77 minimum security inmates.
