PRINCE ALBERT, SK, June 2, 2005 - At approximately 21:30 hours on Wednesday June 1, 2005 a 34 year old male inmate, was discovered to be non responsive to staff. CPR was administered at the scene and the inmate was transported to Victoria Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short while later. The inmate was housed on the Maximum Security Unit at the institution. The name of the deceased inmate will not be released until next of kin are notified.
The RCMP and institutional officials are investigating the death, which is being treated as suspicious. The unit where the incident occurred is currently locked down.
The incident will also be the focus of a detailed national investigation by Correctional Service of Canada.
Saskatchewan Penitentiary is a medium security institution currently accommodating 404 inmates. It also contains a separate Maximum Security Unit, which can accommodate an additional 80 inmates.
