FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ESCAPE FROM GRIERSON CENTRE

EDMONTON, AB, June 16, 2005 - At approximately 6 a.m. this morning, inmate Shane Irwin did not report to the control desk to secure his work permit for the day. When he failed to report, a complete search of the building, surrounding complex and grounds did not locate the inmate. Police were notified immediately. Mr. Irwin was last seen at the Centre at 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2005.

Shane Irwin is 28 years old, serving a two year, ten month, twenty-seven day sentence for break enter and commit (x16), fail to comply with probation order (x2), possession of a schedule I substance. His sentence commenced on November, 03, 2003. He is 167 cm tall (5' 6''), weighs 68 kilograms (150 lbs) and has a fair complexion with blue eyes and brown hair.

Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Shane Irwin is asked to contact police.

This is the first escape from the Centre this year. Last year there was one escape. Grierson has had two instances this year where inmates failed to return to the facility and were declared unlawfully at large (UAL). Both inmates surrendered themselves into custody within twelve hours of having been declared UAL.

The Correctional Service of Canada will be conducting a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding this escape.

The Grierson Centre is a minimum security institution that accommodates 30 inmates. Grierson Centre is part of the Grierson Complex located at 9530 101 Avenue in downtown Edmonton. Minimum security inmates are rated as low escape risks, low risks to public safety in the event of an escape and have been progressing well with their correctional plans.
