FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRINCE ALBERT, SK, December 23, 2005 - At approximately 21:40 hours on Thursday December 22, 2005 a 28 year old male inmate was assaulted by other inmates at the institution. CPR was administered at the scene and the inmate was transported to Victoria Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short while later. The incident occurred in the auditorium located within the Maximum Security Unit, during a scheduled exercise period for general population inmates. The name of the deceased inmate will not be released until next of kin are notified.

The RCMP and institutional officials are investigating the death, which is being treated as suspicious. The unit where the incident occurred is currently locked down.

The incident will also be the focus of a detailed investigation by Correctional Service of Canada.

Saskatchewan Penitentiary is a multi-level security institution currently accommodating 392 medium security inmates and 77 maximum security inmates.
