FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DRUMHELLER, AB, February 14, 2006 - Correctional officers working with a drug interdiction dog have successfully intercepted a large quantity of drugs bound for Drumheller Institution.
Officers were conducting routine visitor searches on February 11 when a drug detector dog indicated the presence of drugs on a visitor. The female visitor admitted to carrying drugs on her person and turned over 57.77 grams of hashish oil and 10 ecstasy pills.
Police have been notified of the seizure.
The Correctional Service of Canada is committed to a zero tolerance policy that uses a combination of screening techniques for visitors and dynamic security provided by correctional officers to combat the introduction and use of drugs in federal facilities. The use of a drug detection dog and an ion scan machine at the main entrance can detect drugs that are on or have been in contact with visitors.
Drumheller Institution is a federal facility for minimum and medium security inmates. There are currently 560 inmates incarcerated in the facility.
