FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WINNIPEG, MB, May 5, 2006 - At approximately 13:45 hrs on May 3, 2006 an inmate was found to be unresponsive in his cell.

CPR was initiated, an ambulance was immediately called and the inmate was taken to the Institutional Health Care Centre. Paramedics attended and the inmate was pronounced dead at approximately 14:15 hrs.

The RCMP was notified and has attended the institution. The death is being treated as suspicious and will be the focus of both an RCMP and a CSC investigation.

The identity of the deceased inmate is not being released at this time, pending notification of next of kin.

There are no other reported inmate injuries. The institution is currently calm and locked down.

Stony Mountain Institution is a medium security federal penitentiary located 13 km north of Winnipeg. Currently there are 562 inmates incarcerated at Stony Mountain Institution.
