FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH AT STONY MOUNTAIN INSTITUTION

WINNIPEG, MB, May 12, 2006 - At approximately 06:45 hrs on May 12, 2006 an inmate was found to be unresponsive in his cell.

CPR was initiated, an ambulance was immediately called, paramedics attended and the inmate was taken to the Stonewall Hospital. The inmate was pronounced dead by a doctor at the hospital at approximately 08:09 hrs.

The RCMP was notified and attended the institution. At this time, there are no signs of foul play. An autopsy will follow to determine the cause of death. The death will be the focus of both an RCMP and a CSC investigation. The deceased inmate's next of kin have been notified.

The deceased inmate, Shawn Jones, was a 28 year old inmate serving a 3 year, 9 month and 10 day sentence for robbery-use of firearm x2, possession of a weapon, failure to comply with conditions under recognizance and theft under. His sentence commenced on August 8, 2003 and was due to expire on June 1, 2007.

There are no other reported inmate injuries. The institution is currently calm and operating on a normal routine.

Stony Mountain Institution is a medium security federal penitentiary located 13 km north of Winnipeg. Currently there are 552 inmates incarcerated at Stony Mountain Institution.
