FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
EDMONTON, AB, May 12, 2006 - Inmates at Edmonton Institution were locked in their cells as the institution was placed on a lockdown status on May 11 at 1600 hrs in order to facilitate a thorough search of the institution.
The lockdown was initiated as a result of staff observations and internal intelligence which suggested that drugs and weapons may have been obtained by inmates.
Inmate's visits and regular institutional routine have been suspended and the institution will remain on lockdown until the search has been completed.
Edmonton Institution is a maximum security facility operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. It is located in Edmonton, Alberta and currently houses a population of 230 male inmates.
