LOCKDOWN AT EDMONTON INSTITUTION

EDMONTON, AB, June 26, 2006 - Inmates at Edmonton Institution were locked in their cells as the institution was placed on a lockdown status on June 23, 2006. This was to facilitate a thorough search of the institution.

The lockdown was initiated as a result of police information and internal intelligence that a package, possibly containing a weapon, had been tossed into the prison yard. Inmates' visits and regular institutional routine have been suspended and the institution will remain on lockdown until the search has been completed and institutional management determines it is safe to return to normal operations.

Edmonton Institution is a maximum security federal penitentiary located 15 km north of Edmonton. Currently there are 235 inmates incarcerated at Edmonton Institution.
