STONY MOUNTAIN, MB, June 27, 2006 - At approximately 02:38 hrs today Correctional Officers found an inmate unresponsive in his cell.
Immediately, CPR was initiated and an ambulance was called. Paramedics attended and the inmate was taken to an outside hospital. The inmate was pronounced dead by a doctor at the hospital at approximately 03:22 hrs.
The RCMP was notified and attended the institution. At this time, there are no signs of foul play. An autopsy will follow to determine the cause of death. The death will be the subject of an RCMP and a CSC investigation which is common with any death of a person in custody. The deceased inmate's next of kin has been notified.
The deceased inmate, Grant Ermine, was a 23 year old inmate serving a 6 year, 1 month and 29 day sentence for sexual assault with a weapon, robbery, break enter and commit theft under x3, failure to comply with probation order x2. His sentence commenced on June 3, 2003 and was due to expire on July 13, 2007.
There are no other reported inmate injuries. The institution is currently calm and operating on a normal routine while providing support services to affected staff and inmates.
Stony Mountain Institution is a medium security federal penitentiary located 13 km north of Winnipeg. Currently there are 573 inmates incarcerated at Stony Mountain Institution.
