FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH AT STONY MOUNTAIN INSTITUTION

STONY MOUNTAIN, MB, July 24, 2006 - At approximately 06:10 hrs on July 23, 2006, correctional officers found an inmate unresponsive in his cell.

CPR was initiated immediately and an ambulance was called. Paramedics attended and the inmate was taken to an outside hospital. A physician subsequently pronounced the inmate dead at approximately 16:25 hrs.

The RCMP was notified and attended the institution. At this time, there are no signs of foul play. An autopsy will follow to determine the cause of death. The death will be the subject of an RCMP and a CSC investigation which is common with any death of a person in custody.

Until next of kin notification has occurred, the identity of the deceased inmate is not being released.

There are no other reported inmate injuries. The institution is currently calm and operating on a normal routine while providing support services to affected staff and inmates.

Stony Mountain Institution is a medium security federal penitentiary located 13 km north of Winnipeg. Currently there are 568 inmates incarcerated at Stony Mountain Institution.
