FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DEATH AT STONY MOUNTAIN INSTITUTION

STONY MOUNTAIN, MB, August 25, 2006 - At approximately 07:45 hrs on August 25, 2006 an inmate was found to be unresponsive in his cell. Health care staff responded immediately and the inmate was pronounced dead by a doctor at the Institution at 0805 hrs. The deceased inmate's next of kin have been notified.

Deceased is Eugene Sigouin, a 56 year old inmate serving a life sentence for second degree murder. His sentence commenced on November 11, 2004.

The Winnipeg Coroners Office and the RCMP have been notified. At this time, there is no suggestion of foul play. The death may be the subject of a coroner's inquest as is common with any death of a person in custody.

The death will be the focus of routine investigation by both RCMP and CSC. There are no other reported inmate concerns. The institution is currently calm and operating on a normal routine.

Stony Mountain Institution is a medium security federal penitentiary located 13 km north of Winnipeg. Currently there are 563 inmates incarcerated at Stony Mountain Institution.
