FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INMATE DEATH AT SASKATCHEWAN PENITENTIARY

Prince Albert, SK, September 22, 2006 - At approximately 09:05 hours on Friday September 22, 2006 a 31 year-old male inmate, was discovered to be non-responsive to staff. CPR was administered at the scene and the inmate was transported to Victoria Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short while later. The inmate was housed on the Segregation Unit at the institution. The name of the deceased inmate will not be released until next of kin are notified.

The RCMP and institutional officials are investigating the death. The unit where the incident occurred is currently locked down.

The incident will also be the focus of an investigation by Correctional Service of Canada.

Saskatchewan Penitentiary is a medium security institution currently accommodating 469 inmates. It also contains a separate Maximum Security Unit, which can accommodate an additional 80 inmates.
