SASKATOON, SK, November 23, 2006 - At approximately 19:00 hours last evening, patient Allan Demers died from a terminal illness at the Regional Psychiatric Centre.
The patient was 51 years-old, serving a determinate sentence and had been admitted to the Regional Psychiatric Centre for palliative care. His sentence commenced on October 17, 2001. His family was present when he passed away.
The death may be the subject of a coroner's inquest as is common with any death of a person in custody.
The Regional Psychiatric Centre is an accredited psychiatric hospital operated by the Correctional Service of Canada located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It is affiliated with the University of Saskatchewan. The hospital is rated as a multi-level security environment. There are currently 195 patients receiving assessment and/or treatment at the Centre.
