FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

STONY MOUNTAIN, MB, December 11, 2006 - At approximately 07:45 hrs on December 11, 2006 an Institutional Nurse and Correctional Officer found an inmate unresponsive within his cell.

The inmate received immediate medical intervention but following an assessment of his condition, he was pronounced dead at approximately 08:10 hrs.

The RCMP has been notified and is on scene at this time. There are no current signs of foul play although an autopsy will follow to determine the cause of death. The death will be the focus of both an RCMP and a CSC investigation.

The identity of the deceased inmate is not being released at this time, pending notification of next of kin.

There are no other reported inmate injuries. Support services are being made available to both inmates and staff relative to this incident.

Stony Mountain Institution is a medium security federal penitentiary located 13 km north of Winnipeg. Currently there are 556 inmates incarcerated at Stony Mountain Institution.
